Adventure Begins at Your Library

Who doesn’t like adventure? And summer is a perfect time for adventure. Come join us at Russell County Public Library for some adventure.

This year’s summer reading theme is "Adventure Begins at Your Library," and a statement has never been truer. Russell County Public Library has so much to offer our patrons of all ages this summer.

One thing that many parents worry about during the summer is learning loss while being out of school. We can help slow or stop that learning loss or even help your children gain some knowledge at the library.

Studies have shown that reading 15-20 minutes a day, 3-4 days a week during the summer can help prevent that horrible “summer slide” and help student keep up their skills. Reading during the summer helps children to retain the skills they have learned and have them where they need to be when the new school year starts. This can be part of a new “adventure” to embark on with your family at the library this summer. Join us at Russell County Public Library for one of our many summer programs where children and adults alike can have fun, meet new friends, and get introduced to new books at your local library.

Since this year’s theme is all about adventure, we want to get the kids outside and help them to find some adventure. The Summer Reading Kickoff will take place at the J.S. Easterly Park trail in Lebanon and the Redbud Trail behind the library in Honker. We will have sign-ups, scavenger hunts, and play time for the participants.

Our next outdoor adventure will be the Bubble Brigade, a favorite of our summer readers. We will also have Farmer Minor, Tampa Taiko Japanese Drumming, and a Smokey Bear Reading Challenge. During summer reading, the participants can earn prizes for simply reading books and turning in their book lists. We will also have our summer semester of our preschool programs of Mini Music on Mondays in Lebanon, and Storytime on Wednesdays and Fridays in both locations. Bring your preschooler in to make new friends, listen to stories, sing, dance, and do crafts.

Some of the other programs available this summer at the library will be Hooked on Crochet on Fridays in Honaker; these are for the novice or experienced, or if you just want to stop by and chat and learn how to create these beautiful forms of art. We also have Connect with Crafts with Miss Sandy monthly doing a different craft each month at both libraries. The Second Thursday morning at Lebanon, we have a Coloring Therapy program available for all ages; come in and color to get out your frustrations and calm your nerves.

The Summer Reads Evening Book Club will meet on Tuesday evening, June 25th to discuss She’s Not Sorry by Mary Kubica. This title is available in print, on the Libby app, and through Hoopla.

The third Thursday of the month, Dungeons and Dragons club meets at the Lebanon Library. We will be having assorted teen programs throughout the summer. Watch our calendar for game nights, movie nights, and a chance to come in and try out our new VR headsets.

You may call either library, 889-8044 or 873-6600 for more information. For a complete calendar of our events, please see our website at https://russell.lib.va.us for drop either library for a printed calendar.
