New Library Station in Dante

The Russell County Public Library now has a library station located in the new Dante Community Center. It is currently open most Wednesdays from 10:00 am-4:00 pm. Visitors can apply for a library card that can be used at the Dante, Lebanon, and Honaker

locations. Books, movies, and music are available to check out at the Dante station. Adult, teen, and children's books are available. Library patrons may also request books from the main library and have them delivered to Dante. More volunteers are need to keep the library station open. If interested, please call 889-8044.

When the libraries open on January 3, 2012, new hours will be in effect. These changes are based on patterns of patron use so will better meet the needs of patrons. Lebanon Library’s hours will change seasonally, closing Monday and Tuesday at 7 pm during the winter while remaining open Monday and Tuesday until 8 pm during the summer. Lebanon Library will follow the summer schedule Memorial Day through Labor Day. If it seems confusing, please note the Lebanon Library hours are the same Wednesday through Sunday all year round. Honaker Community Library’s hours will remain the same year round.

Making Sense of the American Civil War

After 150 years, people are still talking about the Civil War. And during the winter, we will be talking about it at Lebanon Library on Sunday afternoons.

A reading and discussion series begins January 8th at 2 pm and will continue every other Sunday through March 4. Come by the library and pick up your books and join us. The books are engaging (not HARD!) and there will NOT be a quiz; so if you don't finish the book, no problem!

Here are the first books we will read from:
March by Geraldine Brooks
America's War, an anthology prepared for this discussion series by renowned Civil War historian Ed Ayers.

Leading our discussions will be Dr. Brian McKnight, a history professor at UVA-Wise. Dr. McKnight is a native of Southwest Virginia and has written about the Civil War in the Southern Appalachians.
On the other Sundays in January and February, we will be screening Civil War films, alternating a documentary, like Civil War Minutes, with a feature film, Glory and CSA: Confederate States of America, a Spike Lee film.

Let's Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War, a reading and discussion series, has been made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.

Christmas Tree of Books

This Christmas tree at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland, is contructed entirely of books.

About five feet wide at the base and eight feet tall, it is composed of 1600 hardcover books, none of which were harmed in the making of the tree! The librarian said that the books, mostly duplicates and discards, were treated respectfully--no cutting to fit.

Relay for Life Tree - Russell County Rotary Club sponsors this tree with ribbons to remember friends and loved ones affected by cancer. Each ribbon is $5 and all money is donated to Relay for Life. Ribbons available from Rotary Club members and the Lebanon Library.

Most of us think that Election Day is the first Tuesday in November. It's actually the first Tuesday after the first Monday. That's why we have another week of campaigning to endure.

It wasn't always an "endurance campaign." If you consider not having the option to vote, you may realize that it is a privilege and a right you should enjoy. And with the privilege and right comes the burden...which is what the campaigning may feel like.

Two hundred years ago, I couldn't have voted because I'm female. And originally only property owners could vote--that generally meant white men with land holdings. Times have changed, but heart-felt sentiments often are timeless. Remember the words of John Greenleaf Whittier if you feel like a poor beleaguered voter....

...and VOTE on November 8!

Programs at the libraries are starting up again after a late summer hiatus.

The Lebanon Library Book group meets Sept 14 (2nd Wednesday of the month) at 1 pm. The group will select books to read this fall. Come join us! (And if you can't make that time, tell staff you are interested in a book group and leave your name & contact information at the desk.)

The Craft Circle will meet Thursday, September 15, at 1 pm at the Lebanon Library. Crafters can bring their latest project and share it. The featured craft is cross stitch, so someone will be demonstrating that craft for anyone interested in learning it.The Craft Circle meets the 3rd Thursday of the month and observers are welcome.

And a movie is showing frequently at your local library. Stop by and check us out!

How has life changed for you because of 9/11?

September 11 Memory Project
RCPL wants to know the answers to those questions. The library is coordinating a community memory project to commemorate of the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorists attacks. During the month of September, community members are encouraged to share their thoughts, memories and reflections on the tragic events of that day and what they have come to mean.

You can stop by the library in Honaker or Lebanon and we'll provide you with paper to record your thoughts. Poems, sketches, memories are also welcome. A video camera will be also be available if you prefer speak to rather than write. You can also email us at libadmin@russell.lib.va.us. All the memories will be compiled into a book that will be added to the Local History Collection.

September 11th was a pivotal moment in history, a permanent mark in time for many of us. Before 9/11, after 9/11.

From Appalachia to the White House...with the Secret Service

Book Signing
Hear a Secret Service agent who protected six U.S. president speak today at Honaker Community Library between noon and 3 pm. Joe Dye, a Russell County native who grew up Swords Creek, lived in Washington, D.C., for many years while in the Secret Service. His assignment was the White House where he protected the President and members of the president's family.

Mr. Dye will also be speaking and signing books at Lebanon Library Sunday afternoon, August 21st, 2 - 5 pm. Stop by and hear an insider's stories of life at the highest level of our government.

Dog Days of Summer

It does feel like we've come to the dog days of summer--hot and sultry. The term 'dog days' comes from the Latin and loosely speaking, from the fact that the dog star, Sirius, was dominant in the sky from early July to early September (in the northern hemisphere.) Things are pretty quiet at the libraries as well this month.

Honaker will be closed Tuesday, August 9th,
when construction interrupts the power supply. But progress continues on the construction and renovation, as this picture shows. But due to the renovation chaos, programs are limited this month at Honaker.

At Lebanon, we are also taking a break from many of our regular programs (no storytime in August.) Lego Club will be meeting Tuesday, August 9, 3:30-5 pm and the Crafting Circle will try rock painting August 18 at 1 pm.

Both libraries are hosting Joe Dye, who as a Secret Service member protected a number of U.S. presidents. Mr. Dye, a Russell County native, will be signing his book From Appalachia to the White House.

America's Library

The Library of Congress is the USA's national library, although it was actually established for Congress, hence the name. C-SPAN will premiere an original documentary on the Library of Congress Monday, July 18, at 8 pm & 11 pm ET. The program will go behind the scenes and tour the iconic Jefferson Building and share the history and treasures of this American institution.

Check out C-SPAN to preview portions of the program and see an interview with a former Librarian of Congress, James Billington.You may also want to visit the Library of Congress online. The American Memory Project has amazing stuff, like old baseball cards and daguerreotype photos from the 1800s, such as one of firefighters in Charleston, South Carolina from the 1850s.

You can also listen to sound recordings; how about Southern Appalachian fiddle tunes, Civil War music, or public reactions (audio & video) to September 11, 2001? Can you believe that it has been 10 years? There are also public reactions (man-on-the-street) interviews to Pearl Harbor in 1941-42.

Take an online tour of the library if you miss the documentary July 18. And remember Virginia's unique connection to the Library of Congress--after the Capitol was burned by British soldiers in 1814, Thomas Jefferson offered to sell his book collection to Congress. After a little haggling on price (they settled on $24,000) Jefferson's collection became the seed of the new library.

Watch the C-SPAN documentary on the Library of Congress July 18 at 8 pm and you just might see a few of Mr. Jefferson's books.

Lebanon Library Friends

Silent Auction of
Book-Themed Gift Baskets

Again this year the Lebanon Friends are having their annual raiser at the Independence Day Celebration in Lebanon. Each themed basket contains a book and other gift items on the theme; the silent auction of the baskets begins in late June and is finished on July 4th about 3 pm when bids are closed.

Baskets are on display now at the library and more are arriving every day! They will be on display at the Friends booth at the July 4th afternoon festivities and you can place your bid and make sure that no one has outbid you!

All baskets are donated by individuals, businesses and organizations so the Friends put the money made into children's programs at the Lebanon Library. The baskets make great gifts and support a wonderful cause.

Civil War Grant and Library News

The Russell County Public Library competed successfully for a grant titled Let's Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War. Only 65 libraries across the United States were awarded this grant, from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Russell County Public Library is honored to have been one of four libraries in Virginia chosen. The library will have several programs beginning in the Fall as well as several new books relating to the Civil War. Watch for more information to be announced.

The library in Lebanon has installed a new security system which will be activated this summer, and will alarm if books are taken through the doors without being checked out. The library hopes to better serve the community by decreasing theft and thereby keeping library materials available to all patrons who wish to use them.

The library has added new subscriptions which include The Wall Street Journal, Cooking with Paula Deen, and Country Sample. Stop by the library to see them all.

Hard Work Pays Off

The long-awaited constuction and renovation at Honaker Community Library has begun! Of course, the first part of any construction is often destruction and that's the case here.

Because the addition will sit at the front of the library, patrons will have to enter through the rear door on occasion and can expect some minor distuption of services.

What's all the buzz about e-readers, like the Kindle and NOOK? Find out May 11 at the Russell Co. Public Library. A Barnes & Noble rep will be on hand Wednesday afternoon, May 11, to show you how to handle the NOOK. There will also be NOOKs available for sale, with purchases benefitting the Friends of the Library. National Library Week is April 10-16 and RCPL has many activities planned! It’s not too late for YOU to take time this week to record your stories...your first memory, where you met your spouse, your first date, first day of school, grandma's house, the silly stories your uncle used to tell. You can write it or record it--whatever you are most comfortable with. Share it with your family and friends, or just record it for yourself. If you want to share your story with the library, we will be happy to put it in our archives.

Honaker Community Library is pleased to welcome Roberta Hubbard to our staff as the new Circulation Assistant. Roberta is a lifelong resident of Russell County; she grew up in Drill and presently resides in Swords Creek with her husband and son. She was graduated with the class of 1984 from Honaker High and attended SVCC for 1 1/2 years. Roberta has several years of experience working in the public school system, has taught Sunday school since the age of 16 and also performs numerous other church activities. Roberta also home schooled her son for nine years. She is very friendly, loves books and helping patrons. Roberta is a welcome addition to our library.

The Wall Street Journal is here! The Lebanon Library now has a subscription to the premier business newspaper in the United States. Published daily during the week, it covers anything and everything related to business, including coverage of entertainment, sports and general news. And as you can see from the picture of our first issue, like most newspapers these days, there is color.

So stop in and broaden your horizon. Maybe there IS something in the business world to interest you.

Originally from West Virginia, Jamie has lived in Lebanon for 30 years. She graduated from West Virginia University with a B.S. in Early Childhood Development, and from East Tennessee State University with a B.S. in Accounting. She has several years of experience working with children in Headstart and numerous church activities. She and the library welcome all pre-school children and their parents to visit storytime, which is currently offered:

Christmas Ornament Workshop

Join the Circle of Crafters! The Crafting Circle will be making Christmas ornaments Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at 1 pm in the Lebanon Library. The Library will provide some supplies and ideas, including the use of our die cut machine, which produces the shapes at right. Cards can also be carfted with these supplies.

The Crafting Circle is a monthly program for crafters that meets the third Thursday of each month. Crafters are encouraged to come and bring whatever project they are working on, and enjoy time with other crafters. Each month someone will demonstrate a different craft so it's an opportunity to learn and explore crafts that are new to you!

Basketball Season

Since basketball season has arrived, we thought we'd share this bit of history. Stop by the Lebanon Library and you can probably find a picture of the 1959-1960 teams in the high school annuals.

The Local History Collection at the Lebanon Library has a fine collection of annuals (and accepts them as gifts!) The Local History Collection has many other gems. But the bulk of the collection is family history and records to aid family history and genealogy researchers. Other resources include topical files on Russell County, such as communities, churches, schools, women, and floods to name just a few.

The Honaker Community Library has a Local History Collection that is small, but growing.

Calling All Quilters!

Quilters are encouraged to bring their latest project to the Lebanon Library for the Crafting Circle this Thursday, November 18, at 1 pm. If you have ever wanted to see quilters in action, stop by and see what's happening!

Quilting is a craft that we think of as quintessentially American, but it has a strong tradition in other countries. And modern quilting, with patchwork taken to the level of art, is popular in many countries.

A commemorative quilt recently returned home to Nebraska, thanks to the local public library. A Mystery in the Library tells the story of a historically interesting 'album' quilt that made its way home after more than 100 years. It's the 19th century equivalent of the woven afghans sold as fund raisers or the posters and cards with local high school football schedules and advertising on them; the supporting businesses and communities are featured to show their support...just like the quilt.

Other crafters are encouraged to bring their latest project to the Crafting Circle to share and spend an hour or two crafting and chatting. The coffee pot will be on, so stop by and sit a spell! Then you can take home a few quilting books and get started on your own quilted project.

The Crafting Circle meets the third Thursday at 1 pm at the Lebanon Library. In November the featured craft is quilting; in December (the 16th), it will be Christmas ornaments.

National Gaming Day is Next Saturday!

Saturday, November 13th will be National Gaming Day at libraries across the country. We here at RCPL have a variety of activities planned, including our first-ever Wii 'Carnival Games' event, new and classic board games like 'Wits & Wagers', Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit Jr. and much more. This is a family event, most games are intended for children 5 and over.

This event will be from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Registration is not required, so stop in and see what we have in store!

Heads Up everyone! November 4th is National Non-Fiction Day. The celebration was "initiated by the Federation of Children’s Book Groups in partnership with Scholastic Children’s Books. It aims to celebrate all that is brilliant about non fiction and show that it’s not just fiction that can be read and enjoyed for pleasure.

You might argue that it's just a marketing ploy. But, hey, WE aren't selling anything. Though we do want to market the library to YOU.

Non-fiction can be fascinating as well as educational. It's just a matter of finding something that really interests you, whether it's interior decorating, engine tuning, or Civil War history. Stop by and pick up a title from our display of best-selling non-fiction. From "freakonomics" to political pundits, from biographies to Yankees, we are bound to have something to interest you.

Leaders Are Readers

Our Leaders Are Readers reception and program October 19, 2010, at the Russell County Government Center was a great success. Our program featured local officials and dignitaries and regular library users speaking passionately about why the library and reading are important to them, their life and work, and our community.

The first speaker was Jon Bowerbank, known locally as a Russell County Supervisor and businessman, but who also serves on the board of the Library of Virginia. He brought a battered dictionary given to him by his father to illustrate his talk.

Other speakers included Dr. Hughes Melton, who talked about how doctors now encourage patients to participate in their care by learning about their health condition; he sees the public library and Internet access as essential to helping his patients and building a healthy community. Many others stepped up to talk about their take on the topic and the library's value.

And of course, no event is a success without food. There was a lovely array of tasty treats provided by the Library Board of Trustees, including cake embellished with the library logo! Library Board member Janice Busic is shown ready to to begin serving up the cake.

The whole world will be reading The Snowy Day!

Year after year, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record continues to break a world record for the most children reading the same book on the same day with an adult in their life. With a few clicks, you'll can be a part of the largest shared reading experience in history!

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record began in 2006 and over the past five years, America has joined in, reading classic stories such as The Little Engine That Could (2006), The Story of Ferdinand (2007), and Corduroy (2008). Last year, records were shattered when Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar was read aloud to children worldwide! 2,019,752 children joined together and shared in this joyous and important experience—raising awareness of the early literacy crisis and helping Jumpstart raise funds to serve children in need!

Everyone is invited to attend the first meeting of the Crafting Circle at the Lebanon Library on Thursday, August 19 at 1 pm. Meetings will be held on the third Thursday of each month. A different craft will be demonstrated each month followed by a time to share and work on individual projects. Demonstrations planned for the rest of the year are:

The summer has flown by and this is the last week of the summer reading program. To celebrate, we will have a SpongeBob party on Tuesday, August 3 at 1 pm. We will have stories about SpongeBob, watch a video, make a craft and enjoy refreshements. Weather permitting, we will have outdoor activities as well. Be sure to bring your reading logs to the library before August 13 to be included in the reading total and get your certificate.

We will be having Storytime in the Park on Tuesday, August 10. This will be at the playground next to the pool and starts at 11 am.

Children's Crafts Day will be on Saturday, August 21 at 11 am. There will be stations set up with different crafts. Choose the ones you want to do or make them all.

Take a look at the exhibit Crooked Road Royalty. It features some of the early founders of country music, families like the Stonesmans, the Carters and the Stanleys. The exhibit ends in June to come by the library soon!. Most of the exhibit is in Lebanon, but a few panels are in Honaker.

Hook A Book Summer Reading Program

This year's Summer Reading Program will begin on June 15 with Gyotaku Fish Print shirts at the Lebanon library. Bring a plain t-shirt and leave with a one of a kind piece of wearable art. If you are using a new shirt, it is best to wash it first.

The health department will be here talking about dental health. Weather permitting, we will have bubbles and other outdoor activities.

Children will be able to add a sea creature to our underwater mural by registering for the summer program. They will receive a book log to record minutes spend reading (or being read to). For each hour spent reading they will be able to add another sea creature to our mural. When you are at the library be sure to watch the mural fill with creatures over the summer.

By encouraging reading over the summer, we hope to minimize “summer reading loss” and promote a love of reading and life long learning.

Share the Memories and Save our History

Your memories ARE part of our history. The stories you've heard family tell, maybe about an old one-room or two-room schoolhouse that they attended? Please share those stories with the Russell County Public Library. This year the library is collecting history as part of the celebration of the Library’s 50th anniversary. (Your photographs are also welcome.) Later this year a library program will share the collected stories, history and photographs.

Church minutes, lists of school principals or preachers, sad or just plain funny stories are all welcome and may be added to the local history collection. Photos related to stories or photos of people and places in Russell County may also be added to the collection. Your stories and photos are wanted by the library because these stories make up our history--black history, women’s history, everyone’s history of Russell County. It’s been nearly half a century since a comprehensive book was written on Russell County and more than 20 years since the last Heritage book was published.

So if you still remember that story you heard in childhood that was told and retold around the counter of the country store, write it down and send it in. Set loose the Russell County history that’s trapped in your memory!

Friends of the Russell County Public Library in Lebanon will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair Saturday, March 20 – Sunday, March 28, to raise funds for special projects including the Summer Reading Program. The Book Fair will offer specially priced books and educational products, including new releases, award-winning titles, children’s classics, and current best sellers. Writing Women Back into History

"Writing Women Back into History" is the theme of the 30th annual National Women's History Month celebration. That dovetails nicely with the Russell County Women's Hall of Fame Essay Contest.

The essay contest judges recommend awards to the top two essays in every age division. The judges also recommend women they think should be included in the Russell County Women's Hall of Fame. The Hall of Famers are inscribed in a handmade book that is housed at the library. And the essays are included in the Local History Collection.

So write a short piece, just a paragraph or two, about a woman native to or resident of Russell County and send it to the library by noon on March 18. You can write a part of Russell County's history by "writing women back into history."

Call the library at 889-8044 for more details; and start writing Russell County history. It's a great way to celebrate women's history month and the library's 50th anniversary. And mark your calendar: new Hall of Fame inductees and essay contest winners will be announced March 25th at 4 pm in the Lebanon Library.

Get Creative about your library!

The At My Library Creative Essay Contest seeks original, creative essays about users' unique experiences at libraries and why American libraries are important. The grand prize winner will receive $350, and a People's Choice Award winner will receive $100. In addition, the top 10 finalists will have their essay published on the homepage of atyourlibrary.org.

The essays must be about library users' experience(s) at libraries and include the name of the library or libraries (or their Web sites) where the experience(s) took place.

Go to www.atyourlibrary.org/essay-contest for complete details and instructions. Deadline to submit is December 7, 2009. And be sure to vote for the People's Choice Award, which ends December 14, 2009.

Russell County Public Library will celebrate 50 years of serving Russell County on October 22, 2009. So mark your calendar, because there will be a party at both libraries! What's a birthday party without cake!?

We will emphasize history as we work our way through a year of celebrations, but we will also have some fun, like decade parties, so don't miss your chance to party like it's 1999!

What's happening this month? Some lucky readers will get edible 'reader's treats' this month when they check out a book. The deadline to enter the contest to design a new library logo is October 13. In case you missed it, the Lebanon library's technology got a face lift! I, with the help of a handy technician, have been working on installing a brand new server that will not only speed things up, but will ensure Internet up-time and constant access to files and documents. The old server will be moved to the Honaker branch, and will be installed soon. Please bear with us as we strive to make the technology at both libraries top-notch and easily accessible for everyone. We have experienced some downtime and may continue to have a few pockets of Internet outages in the coming days.

Katie's Goodbye to the Blog

I'm sad to say that after two years here at the Lebanon Library, I've resigned my position. I'm moving to the big city!!! - Washington, D.C., more specifically. Of course I'm excited for this move, and I'm looking foward to the many opportunities I'm sure are out there, but it was very difficult to hand in my resignation letter. It was difficult to even write it. For fear of stealing from Taylor Swift, I will say that there were quite a few teardrops on my computer keyboard.
I am grateful for all of the support and the opportunities provided to me here at the library. I'm especially grateful for the regular story-timers who brightened my Tuesdays and Wednesdays! I have learned so much in my time here, and I will carry those lessons with me to my next job and beyond. Reader, in case you missed it, that was your cue to shake your head at the overall sentimentality of this post. :)
Over the past two years, I have come to regard my RCPL coworkers and many library patrons as friends. I am sad to leave behind this wonderful group of people! So, in saying my goodbyes, I wish all of the staff and patrons the best of luck in the future, and I hope that all of our paths will cross again!

Library Magnifier

Thanks to a generous donor, the Russell County Public Library now has a Merlin video magnifier. This is a device that enlarges and enhances images for those who have impaired vision. It can magnify any image, such as printed text or photos, and display either black and white or color images. It is available for use in the library during regular operational hours.

Keeping Your Computer Clean

They may just be machines, but computers can get sick and lethargic just like us! If you've noticed that your home or work computer takes a lot longer to do simple things such as opening a program or a web browser window, you may want to follow these steps to try and remedy your slowness problem.

1. Free up disk space.
If you are running a Windows operating system, you will be able to clean up unnecessary files with a program (that's already installed) called the Disk Cleanup Tool. This program helps you to identify files that can be deleted safely from your computer. The types of files that you can delete with the Disk Cleanup Tool are: -Temporary internet files; -Downloaded program files; -Files in the Recycle Bin; -Windows temporary files; -Optional Windows components that you don't use; Installed programs that you don't use. FYI: Temporary internet files take up the most space on your computer because the browser saves a copy of each page your browser accesses for faster loading time later (called "caching").

2. Speed up access to data.
A computer phenomenon called "disk fragmenting" is a process that breaks up files needed to operate a computer program, storing them in varying places on the computer's hard drive. Each time the program is run, the computer has to take the time to find each and every scattered file so that it will operate correctly. Windows contains a useful tool called the "Disk Defragmenter" that consolidates related files and folders on your computer. You should run the Disk Defragmenter utility monthly to keep your computer operating at its optimal speed. If you don't think that you'll remember to run it every month, do so when the following occur: -Your computer's free hard drive space totals 15% or less; -You install new programs or a new version of Windows.

3. Protect your computer from spyware.
If you have never heard of spyware and you use a computer regularly, you can be sure that you've encountered it in some way. Spyware consists of programs and code developed specifically for the purpose of collecting personal information without letting you know and without asking your permission. Not only does spyware present security concerns, it can slow your computer down significantly. There are programs developed with the sole purpose of tracking and getting rid of spyware; some you pay for, and some are completey free. One free program offered by Microsoft is Windows Defender, which is installed as a part of Windows Vista. If you are running Windows XP, you will need to download Windows Defender from the Microsoft website by clicking here.

Local History and Genealogy Research

Russell County Public Library Reminder: The library has several family genealogy records available in the local history room for researchers, as well as numerous books and files about the history of Russell County and surrounding counties. The library also houses Russell County marriage records from 1849 to 1911. There is a photo archive with old photos from all areas of the county, that patrons can browse at any time. The library also subscribes to Ancestry.com (available in the library only) and Heritage Quest (available from your home computer if you have a library card).

If you were unable to attend the Basic Computer Skills Course at the Lebanon Branch of RCPL, you missed a great, informational, and helpful class! But no worries: I've scoured the Internet for useful websites about basic computing, and I've found one at About.com. About.com is an online source for original information and advice, and is among the top 15 US Websites (Nielsen Online Spring 2008). I've read through the information offered here about computers for beginners, and I definitely approve. If you're curious about computers, or if you're bound and determined to learn more, maybe even a combination of both - check out the following website. As always, if you need guidance with anything involving a computer or the Internet, you can always visit the Library and we will do our best to help you!

Basic Computer Skills Course @ RCPL - Lebanon

During the earlier part of this year, a series of computer courses were offered at the Lebanon library. Though we had a decent turn-out, it came to my attention that most of the individuals attending were not actually learning what they really needed to know about computers. With companies cutting jobs and the economy standing on its last leg, people are being expected to learn or utilize skills that they're not extremely experienced with - one being general computer use. After conducting a small computer skills survey, I've concluded that there's a large group of individuals in the Russell County area who don't know much, if anything, about how to correctly and efficiently use a computer.

I've scheduled a beginner's general computer skills course for May 16, 2009 from 11-2pm. No pre-registration is required for this course, so if you're interested in gaining some new insight into the world of computers, please stop by. I will be giving a small lesson starting at 11:00 and then the rest of the time will be set aside for practicing and one-on-one tutorials for those needing to understand a specific skill or computer-related task.

As always, if you should need help in learning a specific computer skill, such as opening a program or creating an email address, please don't hesitate to ask one of our staff for assistance.

Picturing America On Display

The Russell County Public Library will have an art display from Picturing America on May 2nd - May 3rd during regular library hours. Picturing America is a grant that the library received in 2008, containing American art and photography from various artists from the 19th century to the present, which are reproduced in large posters for easy viewing.

"Why Is It a Sin to Read for Fun?"

This is the title of an article in the newest edition of Newsweek, and the question it poses certainly deserves an answer. Here at RCPL, our patrons check out a variety of books for a variety of purposes, and many of them, and many of the employees here, myself included, enjoy reading for fun. So I ask you, the reader(s) of our blog, to thoughtfully consider whether reading for fun is really without merit.
In the body of the article, which focuses on Jodi Picoult, a very popular choice here at the library, the writer, Jennie Yabroff, includes a quotation by author Zadie Smith: "'...readers fail when they allow themselves to believe that fiction is the thing you relate to and writers the amenable people you seek out when you want to have your own version of the world confirmed and reinforced.'" For her part, Picoult acknowledges that "her popularity, as well as her accessible writing style, means she'll never win a Pulitzer Prize."
So, what say you, our patrons and readers? Is Smith's quotation an accurate assessment of why readers choose fiction? Is writing in an accessible manner really a Pulitzer deterrent? Is reading for fun really all that bad?

Our Verdict:
Not all books are created equal. However, flowery prose and a distinct lack of mainstream popularity should not a Pulitzer win. Not all readers enjoy Dickens, Twain, or Fitzgerald. However, many readers who do also enjoy the occasional foray into more fluffy fiction. And Picoult, whose prose is quite lovely, if a bit simple, certainly does not deserve literary oblivion merely because her works are accessible and popular.
As for reading for fun, books can take us places we may never visit. They are doors and windows we can open, and cliffs from which we can plunge into any world we choose, and some we wouldn't choose. There is nothing wrong at all with taking pleasure from such experiences.

Updates, and the Importance of Local Authors

Hello, readers, and our apologies - that is, all of us here at RCPL - for the lag in postings! The library can be a bustling place, and has been lately. We're quite glad for the rise in traffic and circulation! Also, we would like to say a fond farewell to Ann, our exiting circulation assistant, and a glad hello to Madelene, who has officially become a circulation assistant. And lastly, next week, April 13th through April 19th, is National Library Week! Come in and browse our shelves, and show your appreciation for your local library! And know, patrons, that we appreciate all of you as well!
Now, concerning a matter of local interest, at the end of this month, the Lebanon branch of the library will host two local authors for readings and signings. Neva Bryan, author of St. Peter's Monsters, will visit us on Thursday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m. Nancy Hill Johnson, whose work, Raised by Flesh, Wood, and Plastic, celebrates the life of her mother, will make her appearance the following Saturday, April 25th, at 11:00 a.m. Books will be sold, and light refreshments will be served at both events.
Personally, as a voracious reader, I would of course encourage attendance of book readings and signings as a rule. I especially encourage attendance of readings and signings by local authors. Just as it is important to buy locally grown produce and support locally owned and operated businesses, it is important to support local writers. So, come out and let these talented ladies know how much you enjoy the work they've done!

The Russell County Public Library reminds the community that the library maintains a books-by-mail program. This is a program available to all county residents who are homebound and physically unable to visit the library. Patrons of the service may request up to four books at any time. The library will mail the books and pay for all postage costs, including a pre-paid return envelope. Patrons may request specific titles or favorite genres of books. They may also make recommendations for titles or specific areas of interest. Anyone interested may call the library at 889-8044.

IMAGINE...kids reading

The Imagination Library is coming to Russell County. Imagine lots of preschool children reading. Isn't it a beautiful picture?
Wait, you say. Preschool children can't READ. Well, no, they can't. But all the research shows that reading to kids and exposing kids to print on a page is preparing them for success in school and in life. Hearing new words when being read to prepares children to read those words for themselves. So that means you should be reading to the child in your life.
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is a foundation that provides books to preschool children at no cost to the family. Local groups pay for the cost of mailing the books to the children. In Russell County, the Russell County Rotary Club has joined the Friends of the Library and the Lebanon Lions Club to get the Imagination Library off the ground. Registration brochures are available in the public libraries and at other sites in the county. Online registration will be available soon.
Why blog about it? Well, hey, we are THE LIBRARY!! Of course we think reading is a cool and wonderful thing. One of the primary goals for the library is to create young readers. The Imagination Library helps do that. Each month a child gets a book mailed to his or her home. The book is just right for the child's age; so the babies get board books (simple books designed to survive the teething stage!), while older children get books that help them get ready for school (think numbers, letters and colors.) In fact, the last book is Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, which arrives the month the child turns 5.
What can you do? Well, you can make a contribution. A contribution of $30 (payable to Russell County Imagination Library, POB 545, Lebanon, VA 24266) will pay the cost of mailing books to one child for one year. And, of course, you can read to a child. :)

Just imagine...lots of happy readers. It's easy if you try. Set a good example; read something today.

"Change is inevitable...except from a vending machine."

So I begin with a humorous quote from Robert C. Gallagher, author of The Express - the story of Ernie Davis - a football player who was diagnosed with leukemia during his rookie NFL season.

Change is inevitable, and when you're lucky, it is absolutely and undeniably for the better! I'm Holly, Russell County Public Library's new Technology Coordinator and Administrative Assistant. Many of you know Karen, my predecessor. Well, she decided to move on and I have the privilege of filling her position here at the library. I thought that a short introduction would be more than appropriate!

I'm not from these parts; I was born and raised in the grand, flatland state of Georgia (extreme Southwest Georgia at that!). My husband and I were hired to work for CGI here in Lebanon, so we relocated to the mountains and are having such a wonderful time so far! While he still works for CGI-Federal, I decided to move on to a position more suited for my skills and interests. Karen had just resigned when I found the online job posting for the library, which also happened to be around the very time I resigned from CGI. Needless to say, I made it through the interview process, fell in love with Lebanon just a little bit more, and was pleased to discover that I had gotten the job! I've been here for about two weeks, and I learn something new and wonderful every day!

If you ever have any technology- and/or computer-related questions, please do not hesitate to come in to the library and ask for me. I will be of as much help as possible! Technology can be a very dark venture into the unknown for most, therefore I'm available to help travellers down its path - one problem at a time! I have a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology from Georgia Southern University, so even if I don't immediately have the answer to your question, I know how to find it!

Misleading. Although many published works lack certain desirable qualities - clarity, focus, pacing, correct grammar, etc. - most all books are valuable as indicators of cultural phenomena, as studies in the art of crafting a story, or as prime examples of what not to do if one wishes to cement one's place in the literary canon.

Advocacy Reception at the Lebanon Library

The Russell County Public Library will be hosting a reception at its Lebanon Branch to celebrate our reading advocacy program, Russell Reads. The reception begins at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2008.
During the reception, you will have the opportunity to star in your own "READ" poster. You may bring your favorite book (as an adult or child!) to use as a prop when your picture is taken. If you don't have a copy of that book, please let us know and we will try to have a copy available; that copy will be placed at our libraries with a book plate in your honor.
We hope this will give you an opportunity to learn more about the library's services and programs. Your knowledge about the library becomes a valuable asset for us when you share that knowledge with others. Please note that since this event is held in the Lebanon Library Meeting Room, it is open to the public and the media will also be invited.

Andrew Chafin to Visit RCPL

Fall Story Time at RCPL

Fall story time began at the Lebanon Library on September 9, 2008! And, I'm glad to say, the kids and the grownups really enjoy it!! This year, there are two different forms of story time, in order to better serve different age groups. A lap-sit story time, designed for ages 1 and under, begins at 10:30 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This session focuses on easy books, and incorporates music and simple movement. For this type of story time, children should be accompanied by an adult. A Preschool story time, designed for ages 2 and up, begins at 11:30 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In this session, the books get a little more challenging, and the movement gets a bit more…moving. This session also includes simple crafts, games, and coloring pages. All story times are held in the Meeting Room, from September until December. Join us for stories, music, crafts, games, cookies, and all-around fun! For more information, contact Katie Britt, at (276) 889-8044.

Reading Roost @ the Fair!

Come visit the Reading Roost at the Russell County Fair. What, you say, is the 'Reading Roost?' The Reading Roost is where a volunteer reader will be sharing children's books on the fair theme of 'Poultry in Motion.' Books like Duck for President and Chickerella will be read at set times. Check the fair schedule for times and bring your children for a quack, I mean, quick break with a book.

Yes, the books were written for children, but they can be enjoyed by ALL. When was the last time someone read to you? I bet you would enjoy it if someone read to you again. Give it a try! Bring yourself, sit on a straw bale and enjoy some fowl adventures.

It will be poultry in motion. ;-D

Diane Griliches at the Lebanon Library

Diane Griliches will visit the Lebanon Library on Sunday, September 7th, at 2:30 p.m. for a presentation and book signing. For those of you unfamiliar with her, Griliches is the author/photographer of the very popular An Appalachian Farmer's Story, a book which tells the story of Roy Lee Anderson, a craftsman and farmer from the Crossroads Section of Russell County, VA, in his own words.
Yes, you read correctly! In his own words. Griliches transcribed the text of the book directly from a recording of Anderson's voice. The book comes with a CD of excerpts from that recording. She, being a photographer, also snapped the black and white photos in the book.
An Appalachian Farmer's Story is available for purchase at the library. Those who already own the book may bring it to the book signing, and all are encouraged to ask Griliches to sign!
